The evolution of the speedpedelec can be measured by the developments of it's components. A simple bicycle was supplemented with a motor and a battery on the rear luggagerack. To achieve more stability and stiffness the frametubes were upgraded, also to carry more weight. Governmental type-approvals (the German DEKRA for instance) and critical consumers (as the American Electric Bike Review) raised the bar further.

And on the road to perfection the thickness of frametubes grew and were made of aluminum (stiffer and less weight). Batteries, starting around 4 Kg) moved towards the centerpoint of gravity (nearest to the crankshaft in the downtube). Rear-suspension, from the MTB-scene, was sometimes added and from the car industry many inventions were tailored to the needs of the growing e-bike market, many a blessing for the speedpedelec: crankshaft gearbox, headlight, ABS and electronics, color displays, and so on.

We disect the modern speedpedelec into it's components.

The picture shows a modern speedpedelec (Flyer Upstreet6 7.10 HS EU from 2022) equipped with a rearmotor, intube battery, sprockets/derailleur gearingsystem and transmission by chaindrive, a highmounted lighting and front-suspension.
